What can I do to save my planet earth

When it comes to you personally, we think what can we do as individuals to save our planet, that we are too insignificant to bring any difference. but thats totally not true. i am listing a few things that you can do in your daily life which are good for the environment. most of them are small lifestyle changes that you can incorporate in your routine. you can think of more as you get into this mindset. whatever actions you take, just consciously think of how they are going to affect the environment around you. i am not preaching anything here. i myself am new to this and slowly learning and trying to incorporate whatever i can. i am still far away from calling myself a person with 0 waste or least carbon footprint. so here are a few tips:
  1. stop using single use plastics - polythene bags (mostly banned these days), disposable kitchenware, to-go boxes etc. the extra effort here is to carry your own cloth bags for grocery, cutlery when you go to eat fastfood, carrying your own reusable water bottle etc. stop using ziplock bags and use reusable ziplocks instead. stop using plastic wrap for storing food, use reusable lids. in grocery stores, avoid using plastic bags for vegetables. use paper or carry your own reusable mesh bags for veggies
  2. minimize the use of paper at home - use cloth wipes in the kitchen instead of paper. use water in the restroom instead of tissue paper, or buy ecofriendly tissue paper rolls.
  3. refuse straws in restaurants. for home, buy reusable stainless steel or silicone straws
  4. be sure to dispose your trash as instructed by your garbage service
  • cardboard, paper, cans (washed) go in recycle. heavy plastic bottles like shampoo, milk, oil, washing liquid etc go in recycle too. make sure to wash the bottles before putting them in trash. unwashed bottles go in landfill :(
  • glass bottles go in glass recycle bin
  • you can compost your kitchen trash. you will need to buy a compost machine and put it in your backyard, a little away from where you can smell it. i need to start doing this. the manure it produces will be useful for your plants
      5. bike/walk to nearby places. use public transport if possible. carpool with office buddies who are on your way
      6. buy/lease an electric car
      7. install solar panels on your roof to minimize dependence on your local electricity company. solar power is the easiest way to get clean power + it brings down your electricity bill.
      8. reduce use of A/C, heaters by relying more on nature. keep the windows open at nights so that the house cools down in summer. that way you wont need A/C unless its really hot. dont overheat the house in winters. its bad to env and bad for your health
      9. buy less
  • do weekly meal planning and buy grocery accordingly. i recently started this and trust me it helps a lot. it takes some effort to come up with a nice meal plan for the week but its worth it. i make lesser grocery store trips now, waste minimum fresh produce and i dont have to break my head everyday over what to cook today. husband and i both happy!
  • buy less clothes, shoes, branded purses etc. when you buy, check the labels and do some research on how the company is producing clothes. go for sustainable companies who manufacture clothes
  • i know kids need new clothes all the time since they outgrow previous ones pretty soon. pass on your kid's clothes to friends who have younger same gender kids and you can ask friends for pass-ons from older kids.
  • use pass-on method for toys as well. use a whatsapp grp to track who lent whom which tous and when. in case they need their toys back
     10. use less water. avoid long showers, tub baths. dont keep the tap running while you are not using the water (like while soaping the dishes)
     11. travel light. dont carry loads of clothes to wherever you go. carry only essentials
     12. donate your old clothes to local charities who can resell the clothes to the needy ones
     13. eat local and seasonal. there is no point in eating something that wasnt produced in your region or country and making it travel 1000s of miles to get to you. + eating local and seasonal is better for your health
     14. avoid red meats
     15. plant more trees. this can be in your backyard/frontyard or in public places. you can check for local NGOs involved in such activities and volunteer for them on weekends.
